Recovering from an operation will depend on what type of surgery you have had, the type of incision, if you have had a local, spinal or general anaesthetic and your general health.

It is normal to feel tired for a few days after surgery and have some discomfort. Your surgeon should be able to prescribe or advise on appropriate pain relief medication or consult your GP if you need to.

It is always important to get moving as quickly as possible post operatively as this encourages blood flow which helps wounds heal. It will also be good exercise for your heart and lungs and reduces the risk of pressure ulcers which can be caused by prolonged lying or sitting.

Try to eat heathy and drink plenty of fluid as this will also aid your body’s natural healing processes. If you smoking try to stop or cut down as this can delay healing.

Your surgeon or their team should have given you post operative advice dependant on the type of surgery you have had to give you guidelines on when and how to move following your surgery and if there are any precautions you need to be aware of.
